Type of cranes are commonly used on construction sites

What type of cranes are commonly used on construction sites ?

A crane is a derrick or a tower that is highly equipped with cables and pulleys that are used for lifting and lowering the material. These cranes are majorly used in the construction and manufacturing industry where heavy equipment is produced.

Generally, most of the cranes are a temporary structure, either fixed to ground or mounted on a custom-built vehicle. The cranes can be controlled from an operator in a cab that travels with the crane, by radio type controls, or a push button pendant control station.

The construction crane operator is highly responsible for the safety of the site, the rigging crews and the working crane. Let’s now learn more about different types of cranes.

Different Types of Cranes Used on Construction Sites

There are a number of cranes that are used in construction industry for different purposes. Some of the widely used cranes in different industries are as follows:

Mobile Cranes

Mobile Cranes

Mobile cranes are most versatile type of cranes used at construction sites.

It is a hydraulic crane consisting of steel truss or a telescopic boom mounted on mobile platform, which could be wheeled, a rail or even on a cat truck. The boom hinging at the bottom can either be raised or lowered by the hydraulic cylinders or cables.

It’s footprint and mobility make mobile crane a construction crane. The footprint is the area required to set up the crane. Moving the crane into a position from where lifting of material can be done easily with correct crane capacity if affected by the footprint.

Telescopic Crane

Telescopic Crane

The telescopic cranes offer a boom consisting of a number of tubes fitted one inside the other. The length of boom is increased or decreased through hydraulic mechanism that extends of retracts the tubes.

Most of the construction cranes of today are some sort of telescopic crane, except for the lattice boom crane with iron constructed frame which is bolted together to get the desired height for the hoist.

Truck-Mounted Crane (Also called as Boom Truck or Picker Truck)

Truck-Mounted Crane

Picker trucks or boom trucks are the cranes mounted on the rubber tire truck. These cranes provide great mobility. The outriggers that extend horizontally or vertically are used to level and stabilize the crane during hosting. The capacity of truck-mounted cranes barely exceeds from 50 tons. There versatility can be found in their mobility and reach.

Rough Terrain Crane

Rough Terrain Crane

It is a type of crane mounted on an undercarriage with four rubber tires, designed for the off-road operations. The outriggers extend horizontally and vertically to stabilize and level the crane when hoisting.

Such cranes are a single engine machine where the same engine is used to power the undercarriage as it is for powering the crane. These cranes can be used in the construction sites having dirt, uneven and rocky terrain. Its ability to travel around the site makes it an effective support crane for lighter hoists on highway, construction and infrastructure projects.
